The view from my bedroom window tonight
Another fairly short hop from Bridlington to Scarborough, but despite the sunny weather there's been a very strong and chilly north wind making progress slow and uncomfortable. The forecast for the next few days is for more of the same, so the plan is to rest up for a while and enjoy the ample delights of the town.
This weekend there's a powerboat regatta on here, so I shall enjoy watching to see how they cope with the conditions.
One of the interesting things to do while sailing is looking out for the wildlife. So far I've seen numerous seals popping their heads up and looking around curiously. They look like black Labradors but without the big floppy ears. I remember some years ago seeing one inside Swansea harbour and my first thought was that it was someone's dog that had fallen in the water.
Today I sailed through an enormous colony of guillemots (I think!) quite a way out to sea. Apparently, they live on the open sea and only come onto land to breed. Several took to the air as I approached, but with squat stubby bodies and short wings they're not the world's most elegant flyers. Lots of flapping but not very much motion. Rather like my progress in the boat today.
